Netherlands > Overview

People can apply for asylum in the Netherlands. However, like everywhere in Europe, it is increasingly difficult to be granted asylum.

Netherlands > Asylum

Asylumrequests are accepted only in the Airport and the Reception Centre in Ter Apel. Most people who ask asylum at the airport are kept in aliens detention during their asylumprocedure. After an asylumrequest at the Reception Centre Ter Apel however, you get shelter in an open asylum centre, and your fingerprints will be taken.

If you encounter problems in your country because of your gender identity or sexuality you can ask for asylum in the Netherlands.

Netherlands > Minors

Unaccompanied minor (abbreviation in Dutch: AMV): When you are a minor you can also ask for asylum. If your asylum request gets rejected it is possible to obtain a regular residence permit which is valid only till your 18th birthday.

You might be able to obtain a (temporary) residency permit in another way than asylum in the Netherlands. It is not very easy to meet all the requirements, but you could check out the following possibilities.

When the police arrests you, always ask for your lawyer before you talk to the police. When you are in alien detention, you will not know how long it will take. The imprisonment may be up to 18 months.

After a negative decision or when you are not allowed to await a decision you have the obligation to leave voluntarily. When you do not leave the Netherlands in the given period, the government will try to remove you by force.

Netherlands > Medical Assistance

Medical care is considered a human rights. All normal health care is accessible for undocumented migrants. The costs are covered by the Het CAK if the client cannot pay by himself.

Netherlands > Work

When you don't have legal stay, you are officially not allowed to do paid or voluntary labor. However, in practice it is possible to have black jobs.
